Plaster Boarding in Poole

As part of our dry lining service, we can also undertake plaster boarding to create a smooth finish on which to paint or add a finish.

Our team is highly experienced in plaster boarding techniques to ensure a fast and efficient process on every project.

Plaster boarding is sometimes called tacking: the boards are fixed and the joins prepared so the wall or ceiling is ready to skim.

Dry Lining Methods to suit each wall

Dry lining means fixing plasterboard to walls and ceilings to give a flat, solid surface, rather than putting wet plaster straight onto the brick or block. How the boards go up depends on what’s behind them:

  • Dot and dab: boards bonded to brick or block walls with adhesive, a quick way to straighten uneven masonry.
  • Metal stud: a light frame for new partition walls, boxing in, or walls too uneven to board directly.
  • Timber battens: fixing points for the boards, with room behind for insulation, pipes or cables.
  • Insulated plasterboard: boards backed with insulation to help warm up cold outside walls.

Moisture-resistant or fire-rated boards are used where the room needs them. Once the boards are up, we skim them for a smooth plaster finish or tape and joint them ready to paint. Our plasterboarding guide goes into more detail.

Tacking boarding that’s ready for plaster

Tacking is the trade name for fixing plasterboard, the stage before the skim goes on. We tack new stud walls and ceilings in extensions, loft and garage conversions, and overboard old ceilings that are cracked, textured or uneven.

A good plaster finish starts here. Boards need fixing firmly and level, with joints set out away from corners and openings and neat cuts around sockets, pipes, windows and doors. Get that right and the skim goes on flat. Get it wrong and you see lines, dips and cracks at the joints later.

How a Dry Lining Job Works from quote to finish

  1. Visit and quote

We look at the walls and ceilings, talk through what you want and give you a free, no-obligation quote.

  2. Plan the boards

We pick the board and fixing method for each wall and set the boards out so the joints land in sensible places.

  3. Fix and finish

Boards are fixed level and secure, then skimmed for a smooth plaster finish or taped and jointed ready to paint.

  4. Clean up

We tidy as we go and leave the room clean, and let you know how long the plaster needs before you decorate.

Dry Lining FAQs

What is dry lining?

Dry lining is fixing plasterboard to walls or ceilings to make a flat, solid surface, instead of putting wet plaster straight onto the brick or block. The boards are then skimmed, or taped and jointed, ready to decorate.

What is tacking in plastering?

Tacking is the trade name for fixing plasterboard to stud walls, ceilings and battens. It’s the boarding stage before the plaster skim goes on, and neat, firm tacking is what gives you a flat finish.

Do plasterboard walls still need plastering?

They need a finish before you decorate. Most people have the boards skimmed for a smooth, hard plaster surface. The other option is taping and jointing the seams, which gives a paint-ready surface without a full skim.

Can you dry line brick walls?

Yes. Plasterboard can be bonded to brick and block walls with adhesive (dot and dab), or fixed to battens or a metal frame where the wall is very uneven or you want space behind for insulation or cables.

Can you board over an old ceiling?

Yes. Overboarding is a good fix for ceilings that are cracked, textured or uneven: new plasterboard is fixed through into the joists and then skimmed. If the old ceiling is sagging badly it may need to come down first.

Can dry lining help with a cold wall?

It can. Insulated plasterboard, or insulation fitted between battens behind the boards, helps warm up cold outside walls. The right build-up depends on the wall and the room, so we’ll talk it through when we visit.

Do you dry line outside Poole?

Yes. We’re based in Organford and dry line and plasterboard homes across Poole, Bournemouth, Christchurch, Wimborne, Weymouth and the rest of Dorset.
