Drying Times and what to expect
Sand and cement screed needs time to dry before most floor finishes go down. A common rule of thumb is about a day per millimetre for the first 40mm, and longer beyond that, so a thicker screed can take a couple of months to dry fully.
You can usually walk on it carefully after a day or two. Tiles can often go down sooner than wood, vinyl or LVT, which need the screed to be properly dry, and your flooring fitter may want to test the moisture level first.
Good ventilation helps, but forcing it with heaters too early can cause cracking. We’ll talk you through the timings for your floor when we quote, so the rest of the project can be planned around it.

What type of screed do you lay?
Traditional sand and cement screed. It’s strong, suits most domestic floors and makes a dependable base for tiles, wood, vinyl and carpet. We don’t lay liquid or flowing screed.
How long does screed take to dry?
A common rule of thumb for sand and cement screed is about a day per millimetre for the first 40mm, and longer after that. You can usually walk on it carefully after a day or two, but wood, vinyl and LVT need it properly dry first. We’ll give you realistic timings for your floor.
How thick does a screed need to be?
It depends on what it’s laid on. Screed bonded straight to a concrete slab can be thinner than screed laid over insulation, which needs more depth to be strong enough. We’ll work out the right thickness and finished floor level when we visit.
Can you screed an extension to match the existing floor level?
Yes. We set the levels so the new floor lines up with the rest of the house, allowing for the flooring you’re putting down, so there’s no step between rooms.
