Re-plastering in Poole & Dorset

Get in Touch

Plaster crumbling, coming away or sounding hollow? Four Four Finishes re-plasters walls and rooms in homes across Poole, Bournemouth and the rest of Dorset.

When plaster has failed, a skim over the top won’t last. Re-plastering means taking the old plaster off back to the brick or block, building the wall up again with a backing coat and finishing it with a smooth top coat. You end up with walls that are solid, flat and ready to decorate.

It’s a bigger job than a skim, so we’ll always tell you honestly whether you need it. Every job starts with a visit and a free, no-obligation quote.

When to Re-plaster signs the plaster has failed

Not sure? Our guide to skimming vs re-plastering explains the difference, and small patches can often be repaired instead.

Blown Plaster

Plaster that has come away from the wall and sounds hollow when you tap it. Small patches can be repaired, but large areas need re-plastering.

Crumbling Plaster

Old, soft or powdery plaster that breaks up when you touch it or won’t hold a fixing.

After Damp

Plaster damaged by damp, re-plastered once the cause of the damp has been found and fixed.

Heavily Patched Walls

Walls with years of filler and old repairs that a skim won’t sit flat over.

Walls far out of true built back up, or dry lined where that’s quicker.

Older Homes

Solid walls in older properties, where lime plaster can sometimes suit the building better than modern gypsum.

What Re-plastering Involves and how to get ready

The old plaster is hacked off back to the brick or block and the wall is cleaned down. A backing coat goes on to build the wall back up and get it flat, then a thin finish coat is trowelled smooth over the top.

Hacking off old plaster is dusty, so it helps to clear the room as much as you can. We cover floors and anything left in the room, and clear up as we go. Sockets, switches and radiators may need taking off the wall, so it’s worth planning any electrical or plumbing work at the same time.

Thick backing plaster holds a lot of water, so a re-plastered wall takes longer to dry than a skim, often several weeks. See how long plaster takes to dry.

How Re-plastering Works from visit to finish

  1. Visit and quote

We check the walls and explain whether a repair, a skim or a re-plaster makes most sense, then give you a free quote.

  2. Strip back

Floors and furniture are protected and the old plaster is taken off back to a sound base.

  3. Build up and finish

A backing coat brings the wall back flat, then a finish coat is trowelled smooth.

  4. Clean up and dry out

We clear up and let you know how long the walls need to dry before decorating.

Re-plastering FAQs

What’s the difference between re-plastering and skimming?

Skimming adds a thin finishing coat over plaster that’s still sound. Re-plastering removes the old plaster and replaces it with a new backing coat and finish, for walls where the plaster has failed.

How do I know if a wall needs re-plastering?

Signs include large areas that sound hollow when tapped, plaster that crumbles or bulges, damp damage, and walls patched so often that a skim won’t sit flat. We’ll check the walls and tell you honestly.

Is re-plastering messy?

More than skimming, because the old plaster has to be hacked off. We protect floors and furniture and clear up as we go.

How long does a re-plastered wall take to dry?

Longer than a skim, because the backing coat is thicker. It often takes several weeks in a warm, ventilated room before it’s ready to decorate, and longer in winter.

Can you re-plaster after damp?

Yes, once the cause of the damp has been found and fixed. Re-plastering over a damp problem that’s still there will just fail again.

Is dry lining an alternative to re-plastering?

Sometimes. On very uneven walls, fixing plasterboard and skimming it can be quicker and dries faster, though it takes a little space out of the room.
